West Price Hill.

West Price Hill.  Tradition. Neighborhood pride.  An obsession with all things Elder.  In case you are a teenager from Mt. Washington and don't know where West Price Hill is see the map below.

Now this map colors in all three Price Hill neighborhoods.  Which brings up an interesting point.  I worked for four years at Elder High School and never heard a Price Hiller distinguish between East and West Price Hill, it was simply Price Hill.  I think the distinction is used more by the city to mark different coverage for city services.  Lower Price Hill was considered "different" though, probably because hardly any Elder students came from there.  So early on in this flog (that's a flag blog btw.  Credit that one to Ryan Adcock) I had the idea of pan-Westside colors kind of like there are pan-Slavic colors (red, white, and blue) on flags, pan-Arab (white, red, (sometimes green), and black) and pan-African (yellow, green, and red).  One color has to be purple, the most common colored T-shirt you'll see over there.  Also, it's on their Welcome to West Price Hill signs.

Then I thought maybe cream from West High for all those Westsiders who actually didn't go to Elder, Mercy, or Seton.

I was on one of my favorite sites, the UK Flag Registry a couple of months ago and saw a British flag that made me think of the Westside.  This is the flag for Shropshire County

Those are leopards, which are the heraldic symbol for the county.  But I saw panthers and a W for WEST and decided to straight up copy this flag for the West Price Hill flag.  So my first attempt is below.

FLAG 1

The colors are purple and cream to represent to Westside institutions.  I tried making the panthers purple, but there wasn't enough contrast between the black outlines and the dark purple.  I did try swapping the colors though on the background and got.

FLAG 2

Then I removed the cream and went with a straight up Elder reference

FLAG 3

The lower panther got I little cut off, but nobody's perfect.

Finally, I tried the first flag again and simply replaced the cream with white

FLAG 4

and the colors swapped

FLAG 5

That's all I got this week. I really wish I could make the purple W and purple panthers work, but it just looks bad when I do it. Now, many out there might say there is more to West Price Hill than Elder!  This is basically and Elder flag!  I think that is a valid complaint but I couldn't come up with anything else, so I would love to see some user submitted flags. Vote and leave comments below.

  1. Don't the women of West Price Hill get pissed that Elder is apparently the only thing that counts? It seems fundamentally sexist...

  2. You would think, and I agree, but I never saw evidence of it. Girls would walk around in Elder or St. X T-shirts. Moms would wear Elder sweatshirts or maybe if they wanted to fem it up a bedazzled sweatshirt that said "Elder Mom". But I never saw boys walking around in Seton or Mercy shirts or dads wearing a "Seton Dad" hoodie.
